Neilton Clarke working at Art Studio Itsukaichi, Tokyo, Japan, during the inaugural residency, 1993.

‘Messages from Artists • Messages from Akiruno’ is the Art Studio Itsukaichi (ASI) Exhibition 2021, celebrating the longevity of the dedicated printmaking studio situated on the mountainous westside of the Tokyo metropolis, whose residency program has been running since 1993.

Curated by Jun Shirasu, in cooperation with the Art Studio Itsukaichi Operation Committee (ASIOC) and the Akiruno City Education Board (ACEB), the exhibition highlights artworks by over 80 artists, Japanese and foreign, made while undertaking residencies during the period from inception until 2019. The artworks are now a key part of the Akiruno City Collection.

Sydney Printmakers member Neilton Clarke undertook the inaugural 5-month residency in 1993 as an invitee of the Japan Foundation, subsequently living there, and where (pandemics aside) he still spends time.

Including statements and related materials by the artists and curator, the exhibition runs 12th to 20th October across two venues, the Chuo Kominkan Gallery (Akigawa, Akiruno, Tokyo), and Itsukaichi Shimin Gallery (Itsukaichi, Akiruno, Tokyo).

Invitation from The Black Hand Gang: A Post Covid Opportunity?

August 14, 2021 by Anthea Boesenberg Leave a Comment

Black Hand Gang is based in Bali, Indonesia, and was established back in the ‘heady care-free’ pre-covid days of early 2020.  It is the leading printmaking facility in Indonesia and has 1.5 years worth of collaborations with artists creating a great portfolio of printed works.

Black Hand Gang have managed to be the flag-bearer for ‘fine art print’ in Indonesia and helped to elevate the medium and have captured the interest and imagination of the art community in Indonesia.

We’ve found liaising with printmaking studios/communities around the world is a great way to connect and see what opportunities may arise.

We are seeking printmakers to come and be a part of our studio.  We have local Indonesian printmakers but would love to explore the opportunity for International printmakers too.  We are open minded and rather than impose a formal structure for how this might happen, are just leaving it as a casual enquiry for people to get in touch, share their resume/ portfolio and then discuss what they are looking for and see if there is some way to make a match.  Could be short term guests or longer term involvement, just exploring to find middle to senior printmakers who see the value and potential of the opportunity here in Bali.  There are more details for candidates if they apply.

We thought you may know anyone or would pass the word about the opportunity – your support to share the word is appreciated with great thanks.

Remote Artist in Residency Calling for Artists

April 3, 2020 by Anthea Boesenberg Leave a Comment

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on Australia’s cultural life – and specifically on artists, many of whom are facing unexpected income loss.

In response to this, and the current environment, The City of Greater Dandenong is offering a remote artist in residency to artists affected by the Coronavirus pandemic.

The Remote Artist in Residency (rAiR) program will offer a paid opportunity for artist/s to develop their artistic practice, from their home or designated studio space. Outcomes from the will contribute to a group exhibition within Heritage Hill Museum and Historic Gardens, alongside a digital exhibition.

Artists working in all mediums are invited to apply, including, but not limited to: visual artists, sculptors, painters, illustrators; writers, musicians or other performance artists, sound and or multimedia artists, video, installation or performance artists, craft or textile artists.

Three artists will be selected. Applications close on Sunday 19 April.

The Tate Adams Memorial Residency at Baldessin Press

March 27, 2019 by Anthea Boesenberg Leave a Comment

State Library Victoria, in partnership with the Baldessin Press, is offering a new artist’s book residency as part of the annual fellowship program.

The Tate Adams Memorial Residency is offered to an artist to accomplish a limited edition or unique state artist’s book, using research from State Library Victoria and the studio facilities at Baldessin Press & Studio.

The Baldessin Press can supply studio access, accommodation and assistance to facilitate the book project in many ways, to the sum of $5000 over the 12-month period.

The recipient also has the opportunity to participate in an event to present their project to the Library, the public and other supporters.

Applications

Applications for the 2019–20 fellowship are now open. Fellowship applications must be received by midnight on Sunday 28 April 2019.

The creative content of applications is of primary importance. Along with clearly describing the book’s proposed content, design and appearance as a finished object, applications can include original text, typography, sketches or examples, proposed printmaking components and binding or presentation. Each application will be judged on individual merit, including the artist’s personal conception, expression and definition of book art.

Note: Applicants must include documented and dated images of their work, along with links to any websites where their work is displayed.
