EOI for a show at the PCA Gallery open now

March 12, 2024 by Anthea Boesenberg Leave a Comment

Artists (individuals and groups) are invited to submit an Expression of Interest to exhibit at the newly established PCA Gallery. Exhibitions to commence from January 2025. Proposals may be inter-disciplinary but must contain elements of contemporary printmaking. This may be in the form of artists’ books, established or experimental forms of print and more broadly paper-based art. Established in 1966 the Print Council of Australia Inc. (PCA) is the peak body representing and connecting our national communities in printmaking and works on paper.

Based in Naarm/Melbourne this national organisation promotes and supports contemporary artists working in print media, and advocates for the appreciation of printmaking, artist books and works on paper as a vibrant field of creative endeavour in the Australian context.

The PCA Gallery is located in Melbourne’s designated Arts Precinct. Close to the CBD, the gallery is a short walk to the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art, Melbourne Recital Centre, and the National Gallery of Victoria amongst other cultural destinations.

Edition Five @ Broadhurst Gallery Hazelhurst with Danielle Creenaune, Angela Hayson, and Jenny Robinson

March 5, 2024 by Anthea Boesenberg Leave a Comment

Surveying the breadth and depth of contemporary print-practice, Edition Five marks More Than Reproduction (MTR)’s fifth anniversary as an artist-run initiative, aligning with International Women’s Day. Demonstrating the malleability of printmaking in both focused and cross-disciplinary practices, the exhibition features recent work by artists from MTR’s monthly artist profile program. Underpinned by parallels and polarities, experimentation is at the nucleus of the exhibition, with artists navigating diverse print methodologies and outputs. In this exhibition, printmaking exists within the depths of the past and the surface of the present; where the reproducible and unique converge and co-exist.

RSVP to the opening event

Friday 8 March

Time: 7:15-9pm

Location: Gallery Lane Cove

Bronwyn Bancroft, Monika Behrens, Judy Cassab, Adrienne Doig, Rosalie Gascoigne, Marisabel Gonzalez, Angela Hayson, Samantha Hobson, Jennifer Keeler-Milne, Maree Kelly, Nicole Kelly, Ildiko Kovacs, Eva Kubos, Sue Lalor, Fiona Lowry, Nurit Ophir, Felixe Rives, Sally Ross, Kate Shaw, Brigitta Summers and Scarlett Stokoe

Uneven Terrain: Surveying the Landscape presents the works of 8 emerging and mid-career artists alongside significant works from the Macquarie University Art Collection. At its core, the exhibition is about how the selected artists present, or rather represent the landscape within an abstracted and conceptual framework full of symbolism, energy, and mastery of their selected medium. These landscapes present us with a version of our world through not only the artists’ eye, but their lived experience. One that is framed by their gender, heritage, and environment.

Part of Gallery Lane Cove + Creative Studios suite of activities to mark International Women’s Day, the title, Uneven Terrain highlights the disparity experienced by many female-identifying artists in this country. It’s no secret that a gender pay gap exists in Australia. It’s calculated that women earn less than their male counterparts. What is perhaps a little more surprising and troublesome is that in the visual arts, female artists earn significantly less than the national average. Even though that more than two thirds of art school graduates are women, works by male artists constitute the bulk of artworks within the collections of most cultural institutions.

With this exhibition we aim to showcase the important, exciting, and skilful work being created today as we join voices with other national institutions to attempt to redress disparities experienced in our community.

This exhibition is part of a two-venue exhibition partnership with Macquarie University Art Gallery.

Co-curated by Rhonda Davies and Miguel Olmo.
