Selected is an opportunity to see into the practice of 22 contemporary artist exploring and thriving in using the medias of Printmaking and Photography across 52 images on display.

Curated by Andy Totman, the show features Sydney Printmakers members Anthea Boesenberg, Rafael Butron, Ben Rak, Jenny Robinson, Mark Rowden, Gary Shinfield, and Anne Starling.

Photography and printmaking are similar in that they both have the capability to reproduce an image multiple times with very little variation in the resulting print. However, photography came about through the desire to create exact visual replicas of forms and scenes without manual intervention, while printmaking originally aided the production of photographic illustrations in books by providing a stronger, non-light sensitive ink. Despite this, the two can exist harmoniously together, and photography provides a whole spectrum of new techniques for the printmaker to use in their artworks.

Protests and Pranks: Student Activism and Pranks from UNSW Archives

Drawing on material from UNSW Records & Archives, Protests & Pranks traces a history of student-led protests and Foundation Day pranks at UNSW. The exhibition features posters, photos, videos, oral histories, and protest ephemera, including badges, t-shirts, and pamphlets.

Protests & Pranks, for the first time, will span all three UNSW Libraries. At UNSW Main Library, the exhibition shifts between global and hyperlocal protest movements. Protests & Pranks reveals how students mobilise to effect change, from the worldwide campaigns against the Vietnam War to student demonstrations in response to university policies. UNSW Law Library features tactical frivolity, the playful, non-compliant side of student resistance that manifested in pranks and stunts designed to provoke and challenge authority. The display at UNSW Paddington Library contains materials from recent climate rallies and political demonstrations to show how students utilise protests as a form of activism to bring about reform. 

The exhibition features photos, videos, oral histories, newspaper clippings, and protest ephemera, including posters, badges, and pamphlets. These materials help to piece together the shared concerns, movements, and cultural identity of UNSW.

Accessibility: UNSW Main Library, UNSW Law Library, and UNSW Paddington Library are wheelchair accessible. The exhibition will include large-text artwork labels and booklets, audio-described guides, and braille exhibition guides.

5th International Mokuhanga Conference 2024

Neilton Clarke, Roslyn Kean and Susan Rushforth have all had their work accepted for the exhibition which accompanies this conference, and all three are planning to travel to Japan to attend the conference.

Inheritance & Innovation: Mokuhanga Artists Explore Japanese Paper

The Fifth International Mokuhanga Conference will be held in Echizen City, home of the Okamoto-Otaki shrine dedicated to the goddess of papermaking. The province of Echizen is renowned for its production of Japanese washi and other traditional crafts.

This conference will focus on Japanese traditional papermaking and the innovative use of handmade washi by contemporary mokuhanga artists. Artists and papermakers will come together for demonstrations and workshops by expert craftspeople, along with an open portfolio session and a product showcase. Workshops will include papermaking, paper sizing, and test printing on Echizen paper.

This will be an excellent opportunity to appreciate the wide variety of Japanese papers and to learn about the history of papermaking in Japan. International mokuhanga artists will be invited to submit work for a juried exhibition of small works. The conference will be followed by an optional bus tour to Nara, with visits to traditional sumi ink workshops and museums.

Open Access Paris Workshop

Seraphina Martin visited Paris in October of this year just in time for the opening of the Bo Halbirk Print Workshop. It’s open to anyone wanting open access or to attend a class. Seraphina caught up with printmaker Laura Osborne from Victoria who was printing a copper plate. They speak English. Something for members looking for a reason to visit Paris to consider ?

Biennial Art Award UniSQ

Neilton Clarke in Paris

Sydney Printmakers member Neilton Clarke is currently undertaking a residency at Cité Internationale des Arts, Paris until the new year, on what is his fifth sojourn, having first gone there from 1988 to 1989 on an AGNSW Moya Dyring Scholarship. Hosting artists, musicians, writers, academics and the like from around the globe, the Cité was co-founded in 1965 by husband-&-wife team Felix and Simone Brunau, the latter of whom, as its secretary general, president, and honorary president, passed away in 2021 at the age of 95. Spread over two Paris locales – the Marais site in the 4th arrondissement, and the Montmartre site in the 18th arrondissement – its individual live-in studios are supplemented by a range of facilities including an auditorium, rehearsal studios, and collective studios for both printmaking and ceramics. The Café des Arts offers residents a place to take a break and meet fellow artists.

The Alice Prize is an acquisitive national contemporary art prize, welcoming entries from around Australia, in any medium or theme.

Significant among regional art prizes, The Alice Prize contributes to one of the largest regional collections of Australian art, with works by leading artists from across its over 50 year history.

Coordinated by the Alice Springs Art Foundation, The Alice Prize is judged by an expert selection panel and judge of national standing, with national exposure for exhibiting artists and the opportunity to show in Mparntwe/Alice Springs, the cultural heart of Australia.

Entries for the 2024 Burwood Art Prize are now open!

The Burwood Art Prize invites artists across Sydney to engage, consider and reflect upon one or more of the following themes: Visibility, Ritual, Legacy. Each theme can be examined and negotiated in a literal, abstract, formal and informal sense.

Artists are encouraged to see these themes as lenses through which their art can be perceived by different people in different ways. A portal and invitation for our audiences to explore broader ideas around identity, community, culture and personal experience. Artists are also invited to consider how each of these themes may connect or disconnect with their personal practice, experience, surroundings or environment.

Open to all Sydney based artists, the Burwood Art Prize featues a prize pool of $14,000 and accepts the following mediums of artwork:

  • Painting
  • Printmaking
  • Drawing
  • Photography
  • Still digital artworks
  • Moving digital artworks (with a maximum duration of 10mins)

Muswellbrook Art Prize Call for Entries

The Muswellbrook Art Prize began in 1958 and has grown to be one of the richest prizes in regional Australia with a prize pool of $70,000 across 3 sections: Painting, Works on Paper and Ceramics all acquisitive.
