EOI for a show at the PCA Gallery open now

March 12, 2024 by Anthea Boesenberg Leave a Comment

Artists (individuals and groups) are invited to submit an Expression of Interest to exhibit at the newly established PCA Gallery. Exhibitions to commence from January 2025. Proposals may be inter-disciplinary but must contain elements of contemporary printmaking. This may be in the form of artists’ books, established or experimental forms of print and more broadly paper-based art. Submissions for solo exhibitions, two / three person shows, or larger group shows are all welcome.

Established in 1966 the Print Council of Australia Inc. (PCA) is the peak body representing and connecting our national communities in printmaking and works on paper.

Based in Naarm/Melbourne this national organisation promotes and supports contemporary artists working in print media, and advocates for the appreciation of printmaking, artist books and works on paper as a vibrant field of creative endeavour in the Australian context.

The PCA Gallery is located in Melbourne’s designated Arts Precinct. Close to the CBD, the gallery is a short walk to the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art, Melbourne Recital Centre, and the National Gallery of Victoria amongst other cultural destinations.

North Sydney Art Prize: Call for Entries

October 9, 2023 by Anthea Boesenberg Leave a Comment

The North Sydney Art Prize is a major biennial art event showcasing some of the best in contemporary art by emerging, mid-career and established artists from across Australia. Artists are invited to submit entries for the exhibition which will be held in The Coal Loader Centre for Sustainability in Waverton NSW from 11 May – 2 June 2024. This unique site enables broad participation and accommodates the inclusion of all mediums including 2D, 3D, installation-based works and site specific work.

Finalist artworks will be displayed in the underground tunnels and chambers and other locations across the site.

The curatorial theme encourages artists to consider the overarching principles of the exhibition site at The Coal Loader Centre for Sustainability. The Coal Loader Centre opened in 2011 as a major regional community resource and was transformed from an old industrial site to a place where you can be inspired by best-practice sustainable technology, community gardens, native bush nurseries and regenerated parklands. The Coal Loader showcases innovation and serves as a community hub for Council’s extensive range of environmental and sustainability programs. Located within the bushland of Balls Head Reserve and adjacent to historic Berrys Bay, The Coal Loader is a site of both remarkable industrial heritage and environmental sustainability.

20 Years of Compact Prints – International Print Exhibition, Auction and Exchange

Umbrella Studio Contemporary Arts invites artists working in traditional and digital print media to participate in our 11th international print program. Compact Prints was first held in 2002, originally conceived and curated by Rebekah Butler. The exhibition welcomed international artists in 2004 and has continued as a biennial exhibition ever since, including national and international tours. The program is greatly appreciated and anticipated, and shared widely via printmaking organisations, artist participants’ networks and online. Many of the artists who have previously exchanged artworks now correspond all around the world. Compact Prints 2022 is a celebration of contemporary print practices, embracing traditional and technological methods. The program provides artists a forum to exchange artwork and ideas. It also provides an opportunity to exhibit in a contemporary art space while supporting Umbrella through its fundraising auction. Explore the previous years’ prints, exhibitions and details here.

Artwork restrictions and recommendations
Participating artists need to provide 3 prints from 1 artwork edition. The paper size of each print must measure 12 x 12cm however the print may be any size on that paper (including full-page bleeds). Prints that are oversized may be omitted or cropped. Prints can include other materials / methods (e.g. chine-collé, stitching) provided that a form of printing is the primary method, and that each of the 3 prints is identical. Umbrella encourages artists to print on high-quality acid-free paper. Digital prints cannot just be photographs – they must be manipulated. There is no set theme however Umbrella reserves the right to monitor or refuse work that may cause offence to the general public. The prints must be newly created (after 1 January 2021).
