Katherine Kennedy Exhibition at Gallery ONE88 Fine Arts

Social Drought: Solo Exhibition by Katherine Kennedy

Dates: 25th – 30th June 2019

Times: 10am – 5pm daily (closed Mondays)

Location: Gallery ONE88 Fine Arts,186/188 Katoomba St, Katoomba NSW 2780

Exhibition Celebration: Saturday 29th June 2019

The individual art works comprising this eclectic body of work incorporate; found rusted objects from arid landscapes juxtaposed with hand-made elements. Wet versus dry appearing surfaces. Woven two dimensional or sculptural elements and blurry out of focus imagery. All items incorporate an element of a consumable ‘drink’ be it alcoholic or coffee, however. For example, I have consciously incorporated alcohol with either; alcohol-ink, shellac, alcoholic packaging cardboard’s, drink-coasters, beer bottle-shard lenses and more.

Curated within this show are works that symbolically stand alone or build context collectively. A solitary object, abandoned, left for time to claim. A female portrait, ephemeral and hovering over a dusty landscape. A detailed, single rock-form supported by a ‘community of rocks’ in the periphery. A close up study of a ‘community of rocks’. Abstract appearing shapes denoting repetition and the singular.

I have thoroughly enjoyed the lived research approach behind this body of work spanning 5 years. The most significant placements influencing this new body of work have been in New Zealand annually for major events and curated exhibitions, on an island famous for its wineries, and a research station at Fowlers Gap run through UNSW Art & Design.

Anna Russell’s work acquired at Burnie.

May 28, 2019 by Anthea Boesenberg Leave a Comment

Anna Russell’s entry for the Burnie Print Prize has been acquired by the Gallery.

Anna harvested and distilled natural materials – saltbush and red river gum bark – and stained the paper before printing in relief and intaglio. Bees’ wax was ideal to create the wandering corrugations. The gritty red earth offered striking textures.

The work celebrates the old metal water tanks, corrugated like the sheds and the roads, which are key to all settlement in outback Australia.

Nathalie Hartog – Gautier: Paper and Place, Gosford Regional Gallery

May 24, 2019 by Anthea Boesenberg Leave a Comment

25 May – 7 July 2019     Paper and Place   Gosford Regional Gallery

For centuries paper has been used as a medium for keeping record and holding memory. In this exhibition contemporary artists Nathalie Hartog-Gautier and Beverly Smith each use paper to respond to the unique character of significant places.

Nathalie Hartog-Gautier’s work focuses on the concept of the voyage, its transformations, attachments and associations. Her large scale paper installations for this exhibition represent her reflections on the environment and history of Hill End, the Blue Mountains and the Central Coast.

Beverly Smith uses natural dyes from Indigenous trees, earth pigments of ochre, sand, earth and binders on paper to tell visual stories connected to her Aboriginal identity, culture and Country. With rich personal iconography she presents a series of works on paper that explore sites of personal and cultural significance in the Brewarrina area.
