Can I submit a ‘painting’ to the M16 Artspace Drawing Prize? How do you define drawing?

Absolutely. The M16 Artspace Drawing Prize is open to a wide range of art forms, including both traditional drawing media and techniques, as well as innovative non-traditional works that push the boundaries of what drawing can be within contemporary art practice.

While the prize is named the ‘Drawing Prize,’ we encourage artists to interpret ‘drawing’ broadly. You can submit works that may be classified as paintings or other art forms if they align with your interpretation of drawing within contemporary art. We are interested in exploring the expansive and evolving definition of drawing.

Call for Entries to Banyule Award for Works on Paper 2026

June 18, 2026 by Ro Murray Leave a Comment

Peta Clancy Here Merri Merri Lies 2023, pigment inkjet print, 150 x 118

The Banyule Award for Works on Paper is awarded biennially to an outstanding contemporary work on paper. This is a prestigious national art prize, with the winning artwork entered into the Banyule Art Collection.

In 2023, in addition to acquiring the winning artwork, we acquired 6 additional artworks from the finalists’ exhibition, continuing to make a significant investment in Australian artists and in this prize.

Each iteration of the Banyule Award for Works on Paper is directed by a theme that aligns either with a current direction in art, pressing contemporary issue or a matter of local interest at the time.

2026 theme

The Heidelberg School was the first significant colonial art movement in Australia. The name was first coined in 1891 by art critic Sidney Dickinson to describe the group of Australian Impressionist artists who painted en plein air in the rural outskirts of Sydney and Melbourne, and had established an outdoor painting camp in the Heidelberg and Eaglemont area.

With their iconic representation of Australia’s colonial history and heritage, these realist and highly romanticised European-style paintings have long provided us with the artists’ early impressions of the landscape and settler life.

We invite artists to enter artworks that critique, respond to, are inspired by, or otherwise explore concepts around the Heidelberg School art movement, interrogating our ideas of the Australian landscape, heritage and colonial history.

This is an exciting opportunity to have your artwork displayed alongside original Heidelberg School paintings, which are on long-term loan from the National Gallery of Australia with support from the Australian Government as part of Sharing the National Collection. #artacrossaustralia

Member News: Sandi Rigby’s Powerful Owls Have Been Acquired by the State Library

June 13, 2026 by Ro Murray 1 Comment

Sandy Edwards, Mapping the Powerful Owl, box of 11 etchings

The NSW State Library has purchased Sandi Rigby’s box of 11 etchings of Powerful Owls. Sandi said the etchings were started in 2012, for a project to fight a development that was going to knock down part of a local Blue Gum Forest, the habitat for a pair of Powerful Owls. Sandi monitored the pair over a season, and was rewarded with sighting of their chicks. Powerful Owls are listed as “vulnerable”.

The box contained the story and a drawing of the area in habituated by the owls. The Library hopes to put them in an exhibition next year for recent acquisitions.
