International Print Mail Art Project 2021
SEE THINGS IN PERSPECTIVE

In 2021 Grafein* organises an Open Call for its International Print Mail Art Project themed: See things in perspective.

Send us your work by post before 30 April 2021. Work in all printmaking techniques or work combined with printmaking, of postcard format (10×15 cm) and on strong paper (minimal 250 g/m2) can be submitted.

REGULATIONS

  • Theme of this project is ‘See things in perspective’.
  • The actual posted print is the ‘artwork’.
  • Participation is open and free.
  • Each participant can send one artwork.
  • Size: c.10×15 cm (postcard), paper of 250–300 gr/m2**.
  • Technique and materials: all printmaking techniques are accepted, as well as other media in combination with any printmaking technique.
  • The artwork should be created and signed on one side (the ‘frontside’) of the postcard 
  • The title of the artwork, technique, name of the artist, country and e-mail address should be mentioned on the backside of the postcard in the left half.
  • The postage stamp and address to be sent to (see below) should be on the backside of the postcard in the right half.
  • Postal costs are to be covered by the participant.
  • Deadline to receive the artworks is 30 April 2021.
  • A photo of the artwork (frontside) should be e-mailed to info@grafein.nl in advance of sending it by post
  • The artworks should be sent as they are, i.e. without an envelope to the following address:

  • Upon arrival the photo of the artwork (frontside) will be uploaded on the Grafein Instagram account with hashtags #printmailart #seethingsinperspective #printmaking2021 #internationalmailart and more and Instagram will be shown on the website of Grafein.
  • Participants can upload photo’s of their artwork on their own social media or in the Facebookgroup Grafeingrafiek.
  • A digital catalogue of all received artworks will be created and published on the website of Grafein
  • The artworks will not be returned, but will be kept in the archives of the Foundation Grafein after finishing of the project.
  • The artworks will be exhibited at one or more venues in 2021 or 2022, address(es) and dates to be confirmed.

Reimagine Art Prize

Hornsby Shire Council’s Remagine Art Prize is calling for entries, with $11,000 in total prize money. The three categories include Digital Art – Stills, Mixed Media 3D/Mixed Media 2D and Painting/Drawing/Printmaking.

Remagine Art Prize has a focus on sustainability and the environment. Artists are invited to submit works that can relate to this year’s theme ‘Fast fashion, fast food, fast running out of natural resources’. Held in partnership with the Hornsby Art Society since 2009, Remagine Art Prize promotes the concept of reduce, reuse and recycle.

Entries close on the 17 May 2021

The winners will be announced on 4 June 2021. Remagine Art Prize will be on exhibition at Wallarobba Arts and Cultural Centre, Hornsby, from 4 – 27 June 2021.

Not the Night Before: Free Grant Writing Course

Working on a grant application for your creative project? Does the thought of applying for funding feel overwhelming or confusing? Want some top tips and regular reminders to help you get your application in on time and looking good?

The City of Ryde is running a six-week email-based grant writing e-course designed to be your virtual accountability buddy and help you take your applications to the next level! Once or twice a week you’ll receive an email with some general advice, links to some of our favourite resources and a reminder about upcoming deadlines.

  • Finding funding
  • Getting organised
  • Grant writing
  • Budget writing
  • Diversifying your income
  • Requesting letters of support
  • Selecting and preparing artistic support material

This course will be delivered as 10 emails sent out between 19 January and 24 Feb 2021.

It has been timed to support applications for project funding rounds with Australia Council and Create NSW closing in early March 2021.

However, the skills and tips in this course will be applicable for a wide range of creative grant applications.

This program is suited to artists and creatives that have a project and are thinking about applying for funding. It might also be interesting to people who are looking to develop their grasp of the grant writing process and want to understand what would be involved in putting together an application.

About the Prize

Since 1958, the Muswellbrook Art Prize has grown and evolved and is today one of the richest prizes for painting in regional Australia. Finalists of the 48th Muswellbrook Art Prize in 2021 vie for a total of $71,000 prize money across four prize categories: Painting ($50,000 acquisitive), Works on Paper ($10,000 acquisitive), Ceramics ($10,000 acquisitive) and People’s Choice ($1,000 non-acquisitive).

Astute adjudication of the Muswellbrook Art Prize over the years has yielded an excellent collection of modern and contemporary Australian paintings, works on paper and ceramics from the Post War period of the 20th Century and into the 21st Century, with the winning acquisitive works forming the nucleus of what is now known as the Muswellbrook Shire Art Collection.

Previous winners of the Muswellbrook Art Prize include such key figures as David Aspden, Sydney Ball, Richard Larter and Fred Williams. The Upper Hunter Region is also well represented with a number of local artists being successful in winning the Prize including Peter Atkins, Dale Frank, Lyn Nash and Hanna Kay.

Along with Muswellbrook Shire Council, who since 1958 has acted as sponsor and administrator of the Muswellbrook Art Prize, Bengalla Mining Company has generously sponsored the Prize for the past 25 years, their commitment ensuring the development of the Muswellbrook Shire Art Collection.

Inkmasters Call for Entries 2021

InkMasters Cairns invites entries for InkMasters Print Exhibition 2021. The exhibition, part of our biennial festival, InkFest, was postponed from 2020 due to the pandemic. New exhibition dates are 25June – 25 July 2021 at Tanks Arts Centre, Cairns. Entries close 9 April 2021.

Dear friends and colleagues

We would like to invite you to BigCi Open Day featuring current artists in residence and their work:

Catriona Pollard (Sydney) merges abstract sculptures foraged from plant material with traditional basketry techniques. Using an intuitive minimal aesthetic, she transforms this organic media into art works, investigating the battle humans have between controlling nature and seeing themselves in harmony with it. Through this reinterpretation of nature, her work offers up the concept that we should actively see nature as part of us rather than simply an object that has no meaning or spirit. 

Richard Wu (Sydney), a Chinese ink brush artist who sees his painting as a practice of self-cultivation towards Dao, the return to elemental and authentic. His painting project features the ‘trilogy of Dao’, beginning with seeking. This is followed by seeing. The trilogy ends in the image of knowing. Richard will reveal a surprise to this image on the Open Day and will show that intricacies and complexities of Nature coexist with, and are indeed manifestations of, the waterfall.

Gary Shinfield (Blue Mountains). Gary’s practice encompasses making works on paper, and this includes various forms of printmaking, painting, staining, drawing and installation. He responds to cicadas, shifting surface of water, ochre coloured ground and sounds of nature, transforming these into drawings and paintings on paper, using natural pigment stains and inks. His work overlaps its physical presence with fragments of memory, renewal and sensation of nature.

Brenton Schwab (Sydney). Brenton’s work is mostly abstract painting and is about the process of making. Much of his enjoyment comes from discovery, which he links to personal experiences within nature. His work at BigCi incorporates these chance and random processes and superimposes elements inspired by Marine Signal Flags. The distortion of this standard communication system reflects how we receive messages around our environmental problems and solutions.

Alexandra Frank (Burrill Lake) has a background in illustration and community art. She paints images of human-animal morphs, inspired by mythology and dreams, as a comment on our forgotten connection with natural forces and elemental cycles. She wants to get primal, earthed, pure in her artistic approach. To know the “all”, which we all are. So, the process of her drawings becomes more interesting than any finished work.

Carolyn Craig: Proximal Noise: Bacteria Nervosa @ May Space.

MAY SPACE and BLACK BOX PROJECTS are proud to present a series of photo-etchings and moving-image works by Sydney-based interdisciplinary artist, Carolyn Craig. This will be Craig’s first solo exhibition at MAY SPACE following her inclusion in Sydney Printmakers 2020 in April this year.
Proximal Noise (bacterial nervosa) brings together components from two series of work, examining conceptions of deviancy and social infection, how particular bodies become viewed as sites of contamination, and the value or non- value attributed to bodies in our society.
