Thu 14th Dec 2023, 6:45 pm – 8:00 pm

Randwick Ritz

45 St Pauls St, Randwick NSW 2031

Join us and share a glass of wine as we celebrate what would have been Lotte’s 100th birthday. To honour her memory, the Weiss family is hosting a screening of the film My Two Lives, which explores the remarkable story of Lotte, her survival, tenacity, and resilience, despite undergoing incredible trauma. We will also hear of the progress on the legacy projects that the family has dedicated in her honour.

Lotte Weiss was a Holocaust survivor. She never forgot the horrors of her three years of internment at Auschwitz and Birkenau. Yet it is her immense life force that propelled her through the torture and devastation that enveloped her. Her inherent integrity and morality remained steadfast. It was her capacity for goodness, kindness, forgiveness, and love which never faltered throughout the misery and beatings she endured, to give her the strength and the will to survive. This is her story interpreted by artist Thea Weiss

Janet Parker Smith @ Ridge Street Window Gallery

November 16, 2023 by Anthea Boesenberg Leave a Comment

Janet Parker-Smith Wicked Garden  |  24 November 2023 – 8 January 2024

The work in this installation reconfigures found materials from our urban landscape and repurposes prints from the artists collection from over the past 30 years. Look and you might see recognisable materials from everyday life that have been transformed into new creatures, objects and forms.

Using different art forms including collage, printmaking, digital print, ceramics, knitting and textiles combined with chattels from the everyday, these materials come together to create an artwork known as the ‘Wicked Garden’. Showing a flight of imagination it looks at ideas around our changing environment, friendships and adapting to new surroundings.

About Janet Parker-Smith

Janet Parker-Smith has a cross disciplinary process using Printmedia, sculpture and collage to create her work. She has been exhibiting nationally and internationally for over 30 years. Janet is well known as a local arts worker and also is a sessional teacher at the National Art School and Sydney Collage of the Arts.

North Sydney Art Prize: Call for Entries

October 9, 2023 by Anthea Boesenberg Leave a Comment

The North Sydney Art Prize is a major biennial art event showcasing some of the best in contemporary art by emerging, mid-career and established artists from across Australia. Artists are invited to submit entries for the exhibition which will be held in The Coal Loader Centre for Sustainability in Waverton NSW from 11 May – 2 June 2024. This unique site enables broad participation and accommodates the inclusion of all mediums including 2D, 3D, installation-based works and site specific work.

Finalist artworks will be displayed in the underground tunnels and chambers and other locations across the site.

The curatorial theme encourages artists to consider the overarching principles of the exhibition site at The Coal Loader Centre for Sustainability. The Coal Loader Centre opened in 2011 as a major regional community resource and was transformed from an old industrial site to a place where you can be inspired by best-practice sustainable technology, community gardens, native bush nurseries and regenerated parklands. The Coal Loader showcases innovation and serves as a community hub for Council’s extensive range of environmental and sustainability programs. Located within the bushland of Balls Head Reserve and adjacent to historic Berrys Bay, The Coal Loader is a site of both remarkable industrial heritage and environmental sustainability.

Introducing Our New Members: Mark Rowden

October 1, 2023 by Anthea Boesenberg 1 Comment

Mark Rowden, Suni Satin Gaze, Linocut

Please welcome Mark Rowden, one of our four new members.

Mark Rowden’s works describe modern moments and memories, with a subtle reflection of the past. Rowden finds inspiration in moments of social interaction, isolation and beauty.

As a master printer he constructs works through the traditional process of relief printmaking, breaking down the visual information to a graphic form, creating shadows and spaces which the viewer can move through, and sharing symbols and stories of living in a modern society.

Mark studied at The National Art School, where he was awarded a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 2000. Rowden worked at Whaling Road studios, one of Australia’s oldest print workshops, for many years. While working there he printed for a number of renowned Australian artists.

He has exhibited widely in Sydney in many group and solo shows. He was invited to be a part of the International Print Biennale in Brazil twice. Rowden’s work is held in numerous private and commercial collections, including Broken Hill and Wagga Wagga Regional Galleries.

Recent exhibitions include The Latterns Pavilion activation 2023, Secret Sitter 2023 – Goodspace and Prints4Ukarine – CBD Gallery 2023. Art Prizes – Gippsland Print Prize – Gippsland Regional Gallery, Sunshine Coast Art Prize – Caloundra Regional Gallery, Remagine, Hornsby Art Gallery and Whitewall project art prize.

He has an upcoming solo show in Colorado, USA, December 2023 and a Duo show at Incinerator Gallery in 2024.
