Roslyn Kean Trapped Beneath the Surface 2025, woodblock print

Hornsby Shire Council presents an exhibition of woodblock prints by local award-winning artist Roslyn Kean, curated by Kathryn Beattie.

Roslyn Kean is the recipient of the 2025 Hornsby Art Prize Local Artist Award. Her exhibition of woodblock prints can be characterised as contemporary, complex, and nuanced. Most distinctive is the structuring of form and space, a concern that evokes the Japanese concept of ma, a pause, whether in space or time. The works have an intuitive empathy for Japanese values.

Mukesh Sharma Hopes and Dreams 2024, Viscosity etching 70x70cm

Last Sunday, multidisciplinary artist Mukesh Sharma presented his work at a Sydney Printmakers gathering hosted by Jenny Robinson at her Studio in Darlington.

It was a wonderful opportunity to hear about Mukesh’s practice and explore the viscosity printing technique he uses to produce richly coloured, intricately patterned prints from large zinc plates. His work draws inspiration from Indian miniature painting and the cultural traditions of his homeland.

Mukesh also shared insights into the differences between maintaining an artistic practice in New Delhi, where he lives, and working in a city like Sydney. He spoke about the challenges of accessing materials and the very different approaches to workshop safety and non-toxic processes. In New Delhi, he can draw on his local community to source discarded materials for his large-scale collages and sculptures. These works incorporate e-waste, including computer keys, to comment on environmental pollution and the increasing penetration of digital technology into everyday culture.

Another highlight was seeing the paper Mukesh makes using traditional methods and layered processes to create a remarkably smooth surface for printing.

Many thanks to Jenny Robinson for generously hosting us. Mukesh is interested in booking her large press when he returns in March.

Mukesh can be contacted on Instagram @mukeshsharma and https://www.mukeshsharma.com/

Jenny has also offered to host other visiting international and local artists visiting Sydney to share their work. Its a great opportunity for members to have one-on-one conversations about anything print related.
