Join the Print Council of Australia

August 6, 2021 by Anthea Boesenberg Leave a Comment

Established in 1966, for over 50 years the Print Council of Australia has promoted and supported contemporary artists working in print media, and advocated for the appreciation of printmaking as a vital and vibrant field of creative endeavour in the Australian context. This advocacy extends to related practices such as artist books and zines, and the broader field of works on paper.

The Print Council of Australia (PCA) is a national not-for-profit member organisation. They publish Imprint, the quarterly art magazine dedicated to contemporary printmaking in Australia and beyond.

It has members from throughout Australia and overseas, including artists, students, arts institutions, galleries, universities, schools and collectors.

The PCA receives NO funding and absolutely relies on membership to raise the funds to pay their hard working staff, pay overheads and produce IMPRINT magazine. Without members the PCA cannot exist.

As a national, not-for-profit organisation, the PCA has Committee Representatives in each state and territory, activating the Australian print community at a grass roots level. The Print Council of Australia has an open membership policy with no restrictions on joining.

From $77.00 a year (including GST), this is what you get from membership of PCA:

  • Subscription to IMPRINT, the quarterly art magazine dedicated to printmaking, artist books, zines and works on paper. (Four issues per year)
  • Free promotion for your exhibitions ‘Australia in Print’ in IMPRINT, in the
  • monthly e-newsletters and social media platforms. Visit the Member Exhibition Submission page for more info.

Ursula Hoff Essay for Imprint

June 27, 2017 by sydprint Leave a Comment

Dr Ursula Hoff was an influential print curator and historian, whose long and distinguished career at the National Gallery of Victoria spanned four decades. Dr Hoff was also one of the Print Council of Australia’s founding members and its first President.

In honour of Dr Hoff’s rich legacy of print scholarship, the PCA in partnership with the Ursula Hoff Institute are inviting submissions from emerging and established art historians, curators and writers, to write an original research essay that considers an aspect of Australian print culture over the past 50 years. This can include the work of individual artists, printmaking groups and collectives, studios and workshops, or particular trends within Australian printmaking, thus a broad interpretation of “Australian print culture” is encouraged.

Submissions will be assessed by a selection panel, and one writer will be commissioned to produce an original 2000 word essay for publication in the Summer issue of Imprint (December 2017), and will receive $1100.00 for their work.

KEY DATES

Deadline for Submissions – Friday 14th July, 2017 (5pm EST)

Successful Applicant Notified – Friday 21st July, 2017

Deadline for Finished Essay – 9th October, 2017

Further details and guidelines here.

This opportunity is generously funded by the Ursula Hoff Institute.

Instead it tended to be a peripheral activity, secondary to painting or sculpture. This changed in the 1960s and 70s.  Frequently referred to as the decade when the print came of age, the 1960s witnessed the emergence of printmaking as a mainstream art form in Australia, when printmaking in the art world moved to centre stage.  A large touring exhibition, the Australian Print Survey 1963, was the culmination of these explorative years. Organised by the then Senior Curator of Australian Art, Daniel Thomas AM, for the Art Gallery of New South Wales, the exhibition was seen by both artists and the public as the official acceptance of printmaking by the art and collecting world. This development encouraged artists to explore the potential of printmaking and use it to produce works which represented major breakthroughs as creative statements, placing print, arguably for the first time, as a primary means of expression. It meant that the boundaries that once defined printmaking began to blur. From the experiments of the 1960s,  printmaking developed in many new directions.Recognizing that prints are a natural extension of their existing practices, many of the artists featured in this publication have taken advantage of new ideas and technologies. The print medium  became a  central part of their activity, the equal of their output in other media, conceived as integral or complementary to it.

I hope that this publication will raise awareness in the culture of printmaking as a more visible art form  than ever before.

Akky van Ogtrop
Art Historian / Curator

Also, join us in the gallery for a glass of wine and final viewing of Emanuel Raft’s beautifully evocative exhibition, The Noise of Silence, this Sunday 31 August from 4pm
