Biography
Mark Rowden is a Sydney-based printmaker and artist whose practice centres on the tradition of relief printmaking, reimagined through a contemporary lens. His hand-coloured lino prints explore themes of identity, presence, and emotional resonance, often weaving together narrative and symbolism to create layered, reflective images. Rowden trained at the National Art School (BFA, 2000) and built his foundation at Whaling Road Studios, one of Australia’s leading print workshops, where he collaborated with and printed for many prominent Australian artists. This experience continues to inform his own practice, balancing technical rigour with an experimental, narrative-driven approach. His work has been exhibited widely in solo and group exhibitions across Australia and internationally. Recent highlights include Contours (Larissa Wild Fine Art, Colorado, 2025), Line and Leaf (Incinerator Art Space, Sydney, 2024), and representation at Sydney Contemporary (2024) and Intersect Art and Design Fair (Aspen, 2025). He has also been invited twice to the International Print Biennale in Brazil. Rowden’s prints are represented in public collections including Broken Hill, Wagga Wagga, Geelong, and Manly Regional Galleries. Recognition includes being a finalist in major national prizes such as the Gippsland Print Award, Sunshine Coast Art Prize, Greenway Art Prize, and North Sydney Art Prize—where he was Highly Commended in 2024. In 2025, he was a finalist in the Life Line Art Prize, Nude and Naked (Manning Regional Art Gallery), and the 9×5 Landscape Prize. Rowden’s work also reached new audiences through its inclusion on the cover of Claire Keegan’s revised edition of Antarctica (2024). Committed to fostering the visibility of contemporary printmaking, Rowden teaches and engages in community projects, sharing his expertise and contributing to the ongoing dialogue of Australian print culture.
