Call for Entries: Burwood Art Prize

Visibility, Ritual and Legacy

The Burwood Art Prize invites artists across Sydney to engage, consider and reflect upon one or more of the following themes; Visibility, Ritual and Legacy. Each of these words can be examined and negotiated in a literal, abstract, formal and informal sense.

We encourage you to see these words as lenses through which your art can be perceived by different people in different ways; a portal and invitation to our audiences to explore broader ideas around identity, community, culture and personal experience. Artists are also invited to consider how each of these themes may connect or disconnect with their practice, experience, surroundings or environment.

For 2023, the Art Prize has been opened up to a series of new categories, and will accept works in the following mediums:

•Digital artworks (moving or still)
•Photography
•Painting
•Printmaking
•Drawing

We are also thrilled to announce that for the first time the Prize will be open to all Sydney-based artists who are Australian citizens or permanent residents. We are asking artists to engage with one or more of the following themes guiding the prize: Visibility, Ritual and Legacy.

WayOut: with Print evolved from a previous hybrid printmaking exhibition at Maitland Regional Art Gallery in 2020 that in its own way was perceived as “way out”.

In WayOut: with Print, this group of eight artists investigates notions of contemporary printmaking. The artists’ work selected here is by no means the complete breadth of the practice, it is merely a sprinkle.

Each of the artists were selected because of their multi-disciplinary studio practices, with print as well as other media and each artist has a background within the tradition of editioning prints and the ability to work within the canon of those traditions. What is important within WayOut: with Print is that the artists also expand, stretch and disrupt how we traditionally see printmaking. This is a break-away group pushing the boundaries of printmaking, experi- menting and questioning those studio-based traditions. They are all freeing themselves from the traditions within the canon of art that sees print as an adjunct and extension of other art forms.

Graham Marchant Solo Exhibition @ Artsite Contemporary Gallery, Camperdown.

The Mist That Follows Rain
Graham Marchant Solo Exhibition

“On my morning walks and through observing the neighbouring gardens from my studio, I became enthralled with how the mist that followed the rain enveloped everything, blanketing the landscape, and dissolving space. The opaque skies concealed and at times revealed a transformed view of the exiting terrain.”

The Mist That Follows Rain is a marked turning point in Graham Marchant’s work since relocating from Balmain in the Inner West to Leura in the Blue Mountains in 2021. Along with the dramatic change in landscape, Graham noticed the vast difference in climactic conditions and the effect they had on the immediate environment – the backdrop for inspiration.

“The studio still lives, and my drawings are a continuation of my preoccupation with detail and playing with the juxtaposition of flora, decorative material, quilts and calligraphy. And my fixation with poppies and orchids remains a subject matter that allows me to explore the changing nuances of light, transparency and texture.”

The Mist That Follows Rain is a solo exhibition by Graham Marchant, showing at Artsite Galleries from 08 October until 30 October 2022.
