Fraser Coast National Art Prize Call for Entries.

May 5, 2023 by Anthea Boesenberg Leave a Comment

Girra: Fraser Coast National Art Prize is an initiative of the Hervey Bay Regional Gallery and Fraser Coast Regional Council that seeks to explore our reciprocal, inextricable relationship with the environment through contemporary art.

Girra: Fraser Coast National Art Prize invites entries from artists working in any visual art medium from across Australia, offering a $25,000 major acquisitive prize. Entrants are invited to submit works that demonstrate a conceptual engagement with the intersection of people, place and the environment. Entrants are encouraged to consider an expanded approach to this theme—Girra is not another landscape prize.

Girra was borne out of the enduring social and cultural importance of the natural environment in the Fraser Coast region, encompassing land, sea and sky. Home of the Butchulla people, the region’s unique natural features include the world’s largest sand island K’Gari and its surrounding waters, recognised as the world’s first Whale Heritage Site.

Entries for the inaugural prize open from 1 May 2023 and close 5pm AEST 21 June 2023. The Major Prize winner will be awarded a $25,000 acquisitive prize. Their work will become a significant early acquisition for the newly focused art collection of the Fraser Coast.

Hornsby Shire Council’s waste and environmental art prize Remagine is now open with $11,000 in total prize money.

Hosted by Hornsby Shire Council in partnership with the Hornsby Art Society since 2009, the Remagine Art Prize challenges artists to create works in response to the crisis we are all facing, with waste and over-consumption.

This year’s theme is Wasteland or wonderland referring to the decisions we make each day about how much waste we create. Will our future be a ‘wasteland’ or can we start taking steps to create a ‘wonderland’ by making better choices to build a circular economy where we protect the world’s finite natural resources and see waste as a valuable resource?

Entries are open to digital stills, sculpture, mixed media, painting, photography, drawing, ceramics, and printmaking.

There are six prizes to be won this year:

  • First prize: $5,000
  • Second prize: $3,000
  • Recycled/reused Materials Award $1,000
  • Local Artist Award: $1,000
  • Youth Award (16-21 years): $750
  • People’s Choice Award: $250

“We are always impressed with the way artists respond to the waste management themes of our Remagine Art Prize. We know that many contemporary artists are concerned about waste and how it is impacting the planet. We are sure that this year’s theme will invoke a wonderful response,” said Hornsby Shire Mayor Philip Ruddock.

“The extraction of resources, production, transport, consumption and disposal of new products directly impacts on our environment including losing valuable resources to landfill, contaminating land and contributing to climate change. We hope that this year’s art prize and exhibition help raise awareness of how waste and over-consumption impacts all eco-systems and biodiversity including native wildlife, aquatic species, and birdlife.”

Entries to the Remagine Art Prize close on Wednesday 26 April 2023 and the winners will be announced at the award ceremony on Friday 19 May 2023.

The Remagine Art Prize exhibition will be held from Thursday 18 May until 4 June 2023, at Wallarobba Arts and Cultural Centre, Hornsby.

For further information and to enter visit https://www.hornsby.nsw.gov.au/remagine.
