Biography

Wendy Stokes has been a member of the Sydney Printmakers since 1980 and works across screen-print, intaglio and relief printmaking processes. Printmaking acts as a means of drawing, engaging with the materiality of mark and process. Themes draw from ritual; that of being embedded in the landscape experience of coast as a site of personal meaning and vestige of memory. I am both a participant and observer of the ocean, shoreline, and estuary on a daily basis and have been interested in the edges and mutable boundaries of silent places within landscapes explored through the filter of abstraction. Formal qualifications: MFA from UNSW, Art and Design, Graduate Diploma SCA and Diploma in Art NCAE, Newcastle. Collections: NGA; AGNSW; PCA; Parliament House, Canberra; numerous Regional Gallery and corporate collections.
