Gary Shinfield

Recent work has been inspired by immersive experiences at specific places, and the creative process has been used to form connections. At the site, I research with drawing; paint directly onto wood and lino blocks; and then cut images. In the studio, blocks are printed on various types of handmade paper, in ‘series’ and as ‘unique states’. Works made are responses to certain elements seen and felt, and, interpreted as abstract forms. My aim is to capture essence of place, the natural changes it is undergoing over time, and being subjected to by external forces. Places where I have worked in Australia include the Blue Mountains, Wollemi and Brisbane Waters National Parks in NSW, and the Grampians in Victoria. Artist residencies include Big Ci International Ground for Creative Initiatives, Bilpin NSW in 2020; Art Print Residency, Spain in 2018; and Compeung, Thailand in 2015.
